It looks at how billions of nerve cells (neurons) communicate using electrical and chemical signals.

In spaces, the brain is constantly reading and reacting to the environment, even when not paying attention. The brain tracks light, depth, movement, sound, and patterns. Then it turns all of that into feelings like calm, tension, safety, or discomfort.

Certain spatial features reliably affect how the brain responds. For example:

Open views can reduce threat responses because the brain prefers environments where it can see what is coming – to be ready for any occurrence.

Familiar natural elements like trees, water, mountains, oceans or organic shapes require less effort to process, which can feel mentally easier.

Crowded or visually chaotic spaces demand more attention, which can increase mental fatigue.

This is studied in areas like Cognitive Neuroscience, which looks at how perception and thinking are shaped by brain activity.

Spaces also affect attention. Some environments pull your focus outward, like a wide landscape, which can feel calming. Others pull it inward, like tight or cluttered spaces, which can feel more intense or stressful.

The brain is not separate from space. It is constantly interpreting space, and that interpretation directly shapes your mood, energy, and sense of wellbeing.

Neuroscience Neuroscience is the scientific study of the brain, the nervous system, and how they control everything humans think, feel, and do.
