Most of the social stratification types are based on the social-economic classification.

Universal: Social divisions are found in almost all societies and cultures (developing countries to developed countries), sometimes deliberately and in other circumstances subconsciously in various forms.

Hierarchical: Startas are arranged in hierarchical order.

Preserves the status quo: Categorisation of people into different social classes is meant to ensure that the status quo is preserved.

Inequality in income, wealth distribution and social status: This means if a person has a high capital income they fall in the upper class. Those with lower-income fall in the lower class and so on.

Control over natural resources such as land: For example, the high-class or the rich class people can own more land or other resources. On the other hand, the poor or the low-class people own fewer resources.

Is in diverse forms: Diverse in nature and remains same with only differences in the name. Caste social stratification, slavery stratification, high-class, middle class, etc., are few such examples.

It has consequences: Such as racial and class discrimination, unjust application of the law, and increasing income gap between the rich and the poor. It also leads to resentment between social classes.

It is purely social: It does not focus on natural abilities of an individual other than inequalities that have been caused by the society.

Inequality of opportunity: Some strata of society will usually have more opportunities for work, education and so on, than others.

Stereotyping: Sometimes, people will stereotype the members of different social strata, cementing a particular image of them in the public’s mind.

Dissatisfaction: The inequalities described above can lead to dissatisfaction, and even unrest, among the populace in a stratified society.

Each society is stratified, and in a global perspective, societies are also stratified in relation to one another.

Social classes

Social class, also called class, can be defined as a group of people within a society who possess the same socioeconomic status.

The term social class is commonly used today but is not well-defined or well-understood.

Most people have a sense of a hierarchy in society, from low to high based on income, wealth, power, culture, behaviour, heritage, power and prestige.

The word class appended after terms such as working, ruling, lower and upper is a shorthand way to describe these hierarchical steps, but with generally vague conceptions of what those terms mean.

Besides being important in social theory, the concept of class as a collection of individuals sharing similar economic circumstances has been widely used in censuses and in studies of social mobility.

A focus on objective social class entails a direct determination of a person’s social class based on socioeconomic variables – mainly income, wealth, education and occupation…

And on social mobility, their ability to move up into other classes.

All societies are stratified, and this stratification is often based on a person’s Socioeconomic Status (SES).

This SES complex formula takes into account three factors:

Education

Occupation

Income

The number of years a person spends in school, plus the prestige of his or her occupation, plus the amount of money he or she makes, determine one’s social class.

People with a high school degree are classified in one group. People with college degrees are put into another.

Using educational attainment levels to indicate SES is problematic for two reasons:

School systems are not uniform in quality

Not everyone has equal access to primary, secondary, and higher education.

School systems globally differ widely in what they choose to teach and there is no accurate equalised system in place.

Some school systems produce graduates who are prepared for higher education, while others turn out people whose basic maths and language skills are so poor that they qualify for only a few types of jobs.

The quality of the education a school provides depends largely on its budget, which in turn relies heavily on the tax base of the town or city in which it is located.

Wealthy cities can afford better teachers, newer materials, and superior technology, whereas poor cities can barely afford basic supplies. Poorer communities also tend to have a higher dropout rate than wealthier communities.

While establishing a profile of a typical high school graduate is difficult, the assumption remains, for the purposes of social classification, that all high school graduates are equally prepared for either the workplace or for higher education, or for the ability to create wealth.

People put themselves into class categories.

Gallup has, for a number of years, asked Americans to place themselves – without any guidance – into five social classes: upper, upper-middle, middle, working and lower.

These five class labels are representative of the general approach used in popular language and by researchers.

Gallup’s last analysis showed that:

3% of Americans identified themselves as upper class

15% as upper-middle class

43% as middle class

30% as working class

8% as lower class

What goes into determining the class into which Americans put themselves?

One can’t measure all possible variables theoretically related to class self-placement, in particular, family heritage and background, prestige of residential area, behaviour relating to clothes, cars, houses, manners, spouses and family context.

But, one can look at the statistical relationship between social class placement and a list of socioeconomic and demographic variables included in an aggregation of three Gallup surveys conducted in the fall of 2016.

This analysis controls for all other variables, allowing to pinpoint the independent impact of each variable on social class identification.

Sociologists suggest there are five social classes in the US:

Upper Class Elite – Represent institutional leadership, heads of multinational corporations, foundations, universities

Capitalist Elite – Owners of lands, stocks and bonds and other assets, wealth derived from what they own. Of all the wealth represented on most Forbes lists, more than half is inherited. Newly acquired wealth, nouveau riche, have vast amounts of money but not often accepted into old money circles.

Upper Middle Class – Represent scientific and technical knowledge; engineers, accountants, lawyers, architects, university faculty, managers and directors of public and private organisations. They have high incomes and high social prestige and are well-educated.

Middle Classes – (upper middle, middle middle) Probably the largest class group in the United States, because being middle class is more than just income, about lifestyles and resources, etc.

Lower Middle Class – Clerical-administrative, provide support for professionals, engage in data collection, record-keeping, paralegals, bank tellers, sales, blue-collar workers in skilled trades

Working Class – Craft workers, labourers in factories, restaurant workers, nursing home staff, repair shops, garages, delivery services

Poor – Working poor (work full-time at wages below poverty line), social services, underclass, unemployed

Evaluation

Individuals assign a relative worth, a degree of preference and a priority of desirability to everything. To the extent that evaluation is a learned quality, a consensus tends to develop within a culture individuals tend to share a common set of values.

This value consensus is the societal dimension crucial to evaluation stratification.

There are three dimensions of evaluation:

Prestige: Which refers to honour and it involves respectful behaviour. Radcliffe Brown says that among hunting societies three groups usually are accorded special prestige: the elderly, those with supernatural powers, those who have special personal attributes such as hunting skill. In the more advanced society, prestige is the commodity that is in scarce supply and it is, therefore, more valued.

Preferability: Those positions – status roles – which are preferred by majority of the people are evaluated higher such as, “I would like to be a doctor.”

Popularity: Those status roles which are popular, about which people know to be very prestigious are evaluated higher – such as an Engineering job. It is the most popular occupation.

The Upper Class | Old Money –

The Upper Class, which makes up about one percent of the US population, generally consists of those with vast inherited wealth (called old money).

Ones classified as High Net Worth individuals (HNWI) and Ultra High Networth Individuals (UHNWI)

Members of the upper class may also have a recognizable family name, such as Rockefeller, DuPont, or Kennedy.

Some members of the upper class work, but their salaries are not their primary sources of income. Most members of this strata have attended college, most likely at some of the most prestigious educational institutions in the country.

The Upper Class | New Money

The category called New Money is a relatively new rung on the social ladder and makes up about 15 percent of the population. New money includes people whose wealth has been around only for a generation or two.

Ones classified as High Net Worth individuals (HNWI) and Ultra High Networth Individuals (UHNWI)

Also referred to as the nouveaux riches (French for newly rich), they have earned their money rather than inheriting it. Unlike the members of the upper class of old money, they do not have a family associated with old money.

Example: Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan, Bill Gates, Larry Page, Elon Musk and other celebrities, athletes, and business people fit into this category.

The nouveaux riches merit their own category because they make so much money that they lead very different lives from those in subsequent groupings.

The newly rich simply do not have the day-to-day financial concerns that often plague the rest of society.

The Middle Class

The next rung on the ladder is the Middle Class, which includes about 34 percent of the population. The members of the middle class earn their money by working at what could be called professional jobs. They probably have college educations, or at least have attended college.

These people are managers, doctors, lawyers, professors, and teachers. They are often referred to as the White-Collar class, referring to the tendency of many middle-class men to wear suits with a white shirt to work.

The Working Class

The Working Class makes up about 30 percent of the population. Its members may have gone to college, but more have had vocational or technical training. The members of the working class have a variety of jobs.

This category is also called the Blue-Collar class in recognition of the likelihood that many of these individuals wear uniforms to work rather than suits. People in the working class are more likely to be members of unions than are people in the middle class.

While there are differences between the working class and the middle class in terms of their values, behaviours, and even their voting records, their standards of living are often similar, but not identical.

The Working Poor

Another new rung on the socioeconomic ladder is the Working Poor. Estimating how many Americans are in this category is difficult because the line separating them from those who are at or below the poverty level (see next section) is not solid. Estimates say that approximately 20 percent of the population could be classified in either the working-poor or poverty-level categories.

People in the working-poor category have a low educational level, are not highly skilled, and work at minimum-wage jobs. They often work two or more part-time jobs and receive no health insurance or other benefits. These individuals are vulnerable to falling below the poverty line. They have very little or no job security, and their jobs are easily outsourced to countries where labour is cheaper.

Every economy needs a group of workers that it can hire during an economic upswing and lay off when the economy weakens. The members of the working poor are such people.

The importance of stratification

Is seen with regard to the functions it performs for the individual and society.

For the Individual: No doubt the system of stratification is applicable to the whole society yet it serves some functions for the individual such as:

Competition: Individuals based on their attributes compete with each other and only those individuals who have better attributes get greater recognition. This may be in the field of sports, education, occupation etc.

Recognition of Talent: The persons with more training skills, experience and education are given better positions. The deserving individuals are not treated at par with deserving candidates. Such a system helps people to acquire better talents.

Motivation: The system of stratification motivates the individuals to work hard so that they can improve upon their social status. It is more true in the case of those societies in which statuses are achieved.

Job Satisfaction: As the jobs are given to the individuals according to their skills and education, the workers get job satisfaction. In case, a person with higher qualification is not allowed to move higher in the social ladder, he feels dissatisfied with his job.

Mobility: The system of achieved status also provides an opportunity for upward and downward mobility. Those people who work hard and are intelligent move up in the social ladder. On the other hand, those who fail to come up to the expectations move downward. Hence, the possibility of change in the position keeps the people always alert and makes them work hard.

The above information is important to consider when deciding where you want to end up in society and who you want to do business with

So basically when determining a target audience or target market segment to decide which customers would be best – you should:

First consider the economic power of countries…

Second: In every country there is a social class system, which one will you speak to – for top-tier it would be the Upper Classes the ones classified as High Net Worth individuals (HNWI) and Ultra High Networth Individuals (UHNWI)

Third: In each social class system there are various ages of population

And in each Millennial within each class system you will find an individual far different from another millennial in another social class group…

That’s why it’s inaccurate to assume all millennials are the same – and most media do not make this distinction.

Everybody proposes a typical millennial – but they are influenced by an enormous number of factors (country, country brand, culture within a culture, social class, education and access) and therefore differ greatly from country to country, and class to class.

Thorough research will have to be done to completely target an audience correctly also considering human psychology and consumer buying behaviour.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make as you build a personal brand is trying to appeal to everyone. In reality, not everyone is your ideal client.

In order to attract your perfect clients, you must be willing to repel those who you do not want to work with. This means identifying a specific target audience and building a brand that is attractive to them.

If you try to be liked by everyone, you will attract no one.

Not everyone that is exposed to you or sees your message will like you or resonate with you, and that is perfectly fine.

You don’t need to reach everyone to build a successful business. You just need to reach your perfect clients.

Here are some questions to help you develop your perfect client profile:

Demographics: what is their age, gender, education, relationship status, income, profession, etc.?

Desires and aspirations: what is their desired future? What are their dreams, goals, and aspirations?

Pain points and challenges: what are they struggling with? What is preventing them from achieving their goals?

The foundation of a strong personal brand is how well you understand your audience and the problems they face. Then you can define why you care and how you solve those problems, which is what you’ll be remembered for.

Where do you stand on the social hierarchy?
