It reflects the nature and strength of your personal and shared brand, what you represent.

It grows and develops as you leverage it for the greater good, transforming Social Capital into social impact.

Social capital is not equally available to all, in much the same way that other forms of capital are differently available. Geographic and social isolation limit access to this resource.

The value of a specific source of social capital depends on the socio-economic position of the source with society.

Social capital is the grease that oils the wheels of society. It facilitates trust, creates bonds among neighbours, and helps boost employment.

A social capital economy is also comparable to a financial economy. Like financial capital, people accumulate social capital based on exchange. However, in the social capital system, the currency is trust and shared connections, and the wealth manifests as social networks.

Social capital arises from activities in five major areas:

Investing your time to forge enduring relationships with individuals and social networks

Leading and supporting community activities

Giving financial and material support to the community and to causes that benefit everyone

Instituting personal investment policies and practices that create societal as well as financial returns

Establishing ESG (environment, social, and governance) policies in family-owned companies and assets

‍

Social capital is solely based on relationships.

What is a relationship?

You can have a relationship with a wide range of people, in various associations.

To be in a relationship doesn’t always mean there is physical intimacy, emotional attachment, and/or commitment involved. People engage in many different types of relationships that have unique characteristics.

Relationships typically fall into one of several different categories (although these can sometimes overlap):

Family relationships

Friendships

Acquaintances

Romantic relationships

Sexual relationships

Work relationships

These different forms of relationships can vary greatly in terms of closeness, and there are also different subtypes of relationships within each of these basic types.

A platonic relationship is a type of friendship that involves a close, intimate bond without sex or romance.

These relationships tend to be characterised by:

Closeness

Fondness

Understanding

Respect

Care

Support

Honesty

Acceptance

The relationships to focus on in the context of your personal brand and its economic value involves stakeholder relationships.

Stakeholder relations is forging mutually beneficial connections with all groups and individuals who have a stake in your life and business and who can help you succeed.

Depending on what you do and in what industry you operate, these relationships develop credible, united voices about procedures, systems, mechanisms, issues, that are important to your organisation, the supply chain and the communities you operate in with an influence on how your products and services will be perceived in the market.

Cultivating a roster of supportive, credible entities – is a hedge against risk and an opportunity to disseminate support from multiple sources.

Everything is a transaction

And everybody wants a fair deal or outcome.

In everything we do, in anything worthwhile achieving, we’ll need the support of people…

To be able to read others’ emotional language, to understand and empathise with them, and to build strong and lasting connections, are probably the most important skill-set you’ll ever need to launch yourself into each new level of the journey towards achieving your goals, no matter what that may be.

Because in everything you do, in anything worthwhile achieving, you’ll need the support of people to get stuff done.

Relationship management includes identifying, analysing, and managing relationships with people inside your team, (or business, or family unit), and helping them develop through appropriate feedback, guidance, mindfulness, hope, and compassion, whilst working towards the goals you set for the team, or for yourself.

In other words, you need to apply certain emotional intelligence skills, or competencies, to influence people to do what you want them to do, in such a way that they look forward to the journey alongside you with excitement and joy.

And that means, making them a fair deal so they will willingly cooperate, built upon:

Trust – This is the foundation of every good relationship. When you trust the people you work with, you form a powerful bond and facilitate more effective communication. When you trust the people you love, you are open and honest in your thoughts and actions.

Respect – When you respect people, you value their input and ideas, and they value yours. Working together, you can develop solutions based on your collective insight, wisdom and creativity.

Mindfulness – This means you are mindful and careful of what you do and say, and in turn pay attention to, and consider, what they say.

Diversity – You understand people have different opinions, and you factor their insights into your decision-making.

Lifeline relationships

“The bigger the dream, the more important the team.”  Robin Sharma.

It will be impossible for you to grow into your roles without help from trusted friends and mentors.

In the book, Who’s Got Your Back, Keith Ferrazzi dispels the myth of the lone professional superman and the go-it alone mentality.

According to Ferrazzi, the real path to success in work and life is through creating an inner circle of lifeline relationships.

Lifeline relationships are deep, close relationships with a few trusted individuals who will offer the encouragement, feedback, and generous mutual support you need to reach your full potential.

These are the people who make sure you don’t give up and quit. Without these people, you will fail. The situations you’ll put yourself in will be too much for you to handle alone.

Social (Relationships) What is social capital?
