Environmental Psychology
Environmental psychology is the study of how humans and their surroundings affect each other. It looks at two directions at once:
- How environments influence thoughts, emotions, feelings and behavior
- How people’s behaviour shape and change their surrounding environments
In practice, it asks questions like why certain rooms feel calming, why cities feel stressful, how nature affects attention, or why some places feel safe while others feel overwhelming.
Researchers in this field often study how design choices like light, noise, crowds, layout, and access to nature impact wellbeing and performance.
The key idea remains – that your brain is constantly responding to your environment, even when you are not consciously aware of it. That response can affect stress levels, focus, mood, and decision making.
